Most blues artists recorded for flat fees and received no ROYALTIES. As a result of this practice, many of the blues artists recorded for as many companies as they could, using assumed names. Possibly the artist who used the most aliases was JOHN LEE HOOKER, who recorded for a variety of labels under the names Texas Slim, Delta John, Birmingham Sam, Little Pork Chops, Johnny Williams, John Lee Booker, Johnny Lee, and the Boogie Man. Technically most of these recordings were made illegally, but many of the companies undoubtedly were aware that Hooker was doing this, because he had an unusual and very identifiable sound.

Of all the banjos, the banjo-mandolin is probably the least suited for solo work. ) violinist and guitarist Six-string banjo-guitar (OME Banjos) Dick Bankston, who played violin and guitar, was a contemporary of Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Willie Brown. Not much is known about him, but in addition to playing blues he played in a string band with his brother. bass and drums Barbecue Bob (Robert Hicks) (1902–1931) guitarist Barbecue Bob was one of a group of guitarists sometimes referred to as songsters, because in addition to playing blues he played minstrel songs, hymns, and folk songs.

Because of the odd way that the five-string banjo is constructed, the right-hand techniques used to play it are quite different from the way all other banjos are played. The right thumb generally plays the fifth string, and the index and/or middle finger of the right hand plays the other strings. Probably the first technique used to play the instrument had the thumb playing the fifth string, while the first finger picked up, or toward, the player’s body. Called two-finger picking, this was probably the way that older black players played the instrument.
